TNPSC English Study Material- Figure of Speech "Simile and Metaphor"

Figure of Speech

Simile:

Simile is a comparison made between two objects of different kinds which have some resemblance, using by a word of comparison like – “like”, “so”, “As”, “as…so”.

Example From Poem(syllabus):

Like a king in exile

And lifted his head, dreamily, as one who has drunken.

As humble plants by country hedgerows growing.

Flickered his tongue like a forked night on the air

How glad I was he had come like a quest in quiet, to drink at my water -trough

In the above sentences, the words “Like”, “as”, are comparing two different kinds of objects. So it is called Simile.

Metaphor

Metaphor is called as Condensed or implied Simile. It compares two things which are not actually the same, but for the sake of comparison or symbolism.

In Simple,  it is a word or phrase for one thing that is used to refer to another thing in order to show or suggest that both are similar

Example:

"Laugh till the game is played"

If you check the above example, life is compared to a game here so it is called Metaphor

"Life is like a game"

If you check the above example, here we are saying life is like a game so it is Simile. If we say life is a game then it is Metaphore.

Example for Metaphore:

1. A thread the length of a span
2. The strong red wine of this mirth
3. Deep blue cup of the sky.

TNPSC English Study Material- Figure of Speech " Personification"

Figure of Speech

Personification:

It attributes life to inanimate objects or abstract qualities. Which means it assign the qualities of a person to something which is not human or something which is not alive.

Tips: Usually the personification words begin with a Capital Letter.

Example:

“How beautiful you are, Earth and how sublime!

How perfect your obedience to the light and how

Noble is your submission the sun.”

In this poem, Earth is personified here.

More Examples from syllabus:

TNPSC English Study Material- Figure of Speech "Alliteration"

Figure of Speech

Alliteration :

Alliteration is the repetition of the initial consonant sound in several words in the line.

Example- So we must lough and drink from the deep blue of the sky

     Join the Jubilant song of the great stars sweeping by

    And the grave is not its goal

    For the soul is dead that slumbers

    Be not like dumb, driven cattle!

    So let us, Unobtrusive and unnoticed

If you check in above sentence, the highlighted letters are repeated in a line . so it is called Alliteration.

TNPSC English Study Material- Figure of Speech " Oxymoron and Onomatopoeia"

Figure of Speech

Oxymoron:

Oxymoron are figures of speech in which two opposing terms are combined in order to get effect .

Example

It is used to make the person stop and think, whether it’s to laugh or to ponder.

“Clearly confused”

If you check the above words, clearly and confused have completely opposite meanings, but bringing together to produce a verbally puzzling, yet engaging effect ( to make readers little confuse).     

        

More Example from Syllabus:

Not Enjoyment, and not sorrow

Onomatopoeia,

It is a word, which imitates the natural sounds. It creates sound effect to the words and gives more expressive and interesting to the reader who reads the word

Example:

"The stone fell into the river with a splash"

In the above example “ the stone fell into the river with a splash”. the word splash gives reader more expression and sound effect ,rather than just reading “ the stone fell into the river”.

More example:

Buzz, Meow, bark etc.

Figure of Speech

Anaphora,      

    

It is a word or group of words which is repeated at the beginning of two or more successive clauses or sentences.

Example From Syllabus:

Footprints on the sands of time

Footprints that perhaps another

You bleached our souls soiled with impurities

You bathed our hearts amid tempestuous seas

And climb again the broken bank of my wall-face

And as he put his head into that dreadful hole.

 Ellipsis,

Ellipsis is a series of dots which indicates an intentional omission of words or series of words without changing the meaning.

Example:

1. After college I went to his house … and then came home
2. He opened the door . . . and saw . . . a cake
3. I never thought…

TNPSC English Study Material- Figure of Speech" Rhyme Scheme, Repetition, Apostrophe"

Figure of Speech

Rhyme Scheme,

Specific pattern used in a poem that determines which lines rhyme at the end of the poem.

Example:

Twinkle, twinkle, little star,

How I wonder what you are.

Up above the world so high,

Like a diamond in the sky.

The rhyme scheme of the poem is determined in the last word of each line, Star and Are in first stanza and High and Sky in second stanza.

Repetition

It is word or phrases which is repeated in a sentence or a poetical line.

Example:

1. Let the dead past bury its dead
2. Act, act in the living present
3. Pining for a new agony, a new birth.

Apostrophe.

When a character speaks to an object or an idea, or someone which doesn’t exist or absent or dead in literary work to produce dramatic effect  and to show importance to it.

Example:

1. Oh, Jasmine, how sweet you smell and how bright you look
2. Bike, please get me to work today.
