Ahmedabad gets world heritage tag by UNESCO

Ahmedabad is the first Indian City to get the World Heritage tag by UNESCO. Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 15th century.

Ahmedabad now will join with heritage cities like Paris, Vienna, Cairo, Brussels, Rome, Edinburgh, Bhaktpur (Nepal), Galle (Sri Lanka).

Reason for the Heritage Tag:

The decision was taken on 41st session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO in the Krakow, Poland, which acknowledged the preservation efforts taken by the city to keep its historical Characteristics undamaged.

The historical characteristics includes densely packed traditional houses in gated traditional streets with features such as bird feeders, public wells and religious institutions includes numerous mosques and tombs, also Hindu and Jain temples.
