Odisha, Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand come together for Elephant census.


Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand have come together to conduct a Elephant Census between May 9 and May 12. The day was selected specifically to sighting the Elephant expected to be easier on night due to Full moon light.

These are the four states have maximum human animal conflict prone area. This is the first such attempt and decision was taken by senior forest department officers of the four States.

About Census Method.
  • They have decided to take census in 2 methods, direct and indirect method with identical set of rules.
  • The direct counting method is based on direct sighting of Elephant.
  • The indirect counting method is uses the “dung decay “formula, in which dung of the  Elephant will be analysis to estimate the population.
  • Already Tamil Nadu and Karnataka has used the Dung Decay formula for their census of Elephant.
